25 Fall Bucket List Ideas for Writers (Feel Inspired This Autumn)

Updated: Aug 3

autumn habits blog post cover pink and blue literary

Autumn is in the air! And if you're a writer, you know what that means. With Preptober, National Novel Writing Month, and cold weather approaching, implementing habits to fuel our creativity is so vital. Whether you're an autumn person or not (which, I don't understand how you could not be), I hope this post inspires you to get out in nature, nourish yourself, and have an amazing writing season!

1 | Explore creative expressions outside of writing such as pottery, watercolors, macrame, photography, or even dance. Even if you don't consider yourself a crafty person, getting your hands messy and trying new things is a beautiful way to nourish creativity!

2 | Write outside if possible (and bring soft blankets with you)! Or wake up early to write on a foggy fall morning.

3 | Redecorate your writing space (I'm working on adding strings lights and mini pumpkins to mine 🥰)

4 | Go treasure hunting for pretty leaves.

5 | Create a gratitude or junk/scrapbook journal and fill it with leaves, pressed flowers, memories, musings, and photos that remind you of the season.

6 | Sit in a place that inspires you and just free write for 25 minutes.

7 | Go on an afternoon drive or hike to see all the changing colors.

8 | Organize and make your Scrivener (or other writing software) more aesthetic.

9 | Take time to reorient and streamline your schedule for the new season.

10 | Create or find a dark academia playlist to write or study with.

11 | Scour Pinterest for cozy autumn beverages to make. This pumpkin tea latte is my personal favorite. 😉

12 | Visit a pumpkin patch or apple orchard.

13 | Make pies (caramel, apple, pumpkin, ahh... my mouth is watering just thinking of it).

14 | Have tea with a writer friend and discuss stories (or have a virtual tea over video call if you can't meet in person).

15 | Write autumn-inspired poetry.

16 | Go thrifting for cozy sweaters.

17 | Search for new and interesting locations to write (I'm always on the lookout for parks, bookstores, or coffeeshops to change up my writing environment).

18 | Buy a fountain pen (They're so dark academia and are pretty affordable on Target and Amazon. I recently did this, and it inspired me to write like nothing else).

19 | Even if you're a discovery writer, try making a minimal bullet point outline for your story (it helps immensely with writer's block and making progress in NaNoWriMo, believe me).

20 | Visit a bookstore to find a few fall reads (even better if it's a vintage or second-hand bookshop).

21 | Rake leaves and (obviously) jump in the piles.

23 | Reorganize and declutter your closet for the colder seasons (declutter and organization of any kind makes for less stress and, therefore, better writing)!

24 | Stay up late stargazing.

25 | Autumn is a time of surrender. What do you need to surrender to God this season?
